Thursday, July 26, 2007; 11:32 AM

Hundreds of guests at the Washington Plaza Hotel were evacuated this morning after smoke filled the hotel's basement because of an overheated sump pump.

Fire department spokesman Alan Etter said the water was knee high. No injuries or damage to guest property was reported.By 11 a.m. guests staying in the eight-story hotel's upper floors were being permitted to return to the hotel, Etter said. Streets surrounding the hotel that had been blocked off have now reopened
