(2007-07-17)

NIAGARA FALLS, NY A fire at the Castle Motor Inn along Niagara Falls Blvd. in Niagara Falls forced the evacuation of several guests Monday night.

The fire apparently began in the kitchen of an adjoining restaurant shortly after 10 p.m. Falls fire chief William MacKay says the flames spread quickly.

Police officers and firefighters helped to evacuate guests from 26 rooms. Rescue crews had to awaken ten guests in one room who were unaware of the fire. All of the guests got out safely. There were no injuries reported.

The fire apparently was sparked by an electrical malfunction in the kitchen of an adjoining restaurant.

Thursday, July 26, 2007; 11:32 AM

Hundreds of guests at the Washington Plaza Hotel were evacuated this morning after smoke filled the hotel's basement because of an overheated sump pump.

D.C. fire crews were called to the hotel at 10 Thomas Circle N.W. around 10 a.m. A drain in the hotel's swimming pool broke, sending gallons of water into the hotel's basement. Fire department spokesman Alan Etter said the water was knee high. No injuries or damage to guest property was reported.By 11 a.m. guests staying in the eight-story hotel's upper floors were being permitted to return to the hotel, Etter said. Streets surrounding the hotel that had been blocked off have now reopened
