Heat Wheels provide a solution for hot climates where there is a need to recover the energy expended in air conditioning. Using a desiccant (water absorbing) coating on a rotating metal wheel, heat and moisture are absorbed from the incoming hot humid outdoor air and transferred to the exhaust airstream. This can reduce the ventilation air-conditioning load by up to 90%.

Hoval thermal wheel heat exchangers are used in ventilation and air conditioning installations for air flow rates up to about 150,000 m³/hr. Wheel Diameters ranging between 0.5m and 6m along with the different types of storage mass allow an optimum selection of performance data for each application.

Wheels which suit the application
Depending on the application, different types of storage mass are used:

Aluminium for the condensation wheel: Transferring moisture only if condensation occurs in the warm air stream.
Silicagel-coated aluminium for the sorption wheel: Allowing efficient moisture transfer even under summer conditions; this is particularly cost-efficient when drying humid air in cooling operation
